Established in 1966, Madurai Kamraj University was given a status of excellence by University Grants Commission recently and thus made it only eighth university to get this excellence award for its immaculate strength of quality education besides dedicated teaching staff and eminent scholars.
Madurai Kamraj University is also known for its beautiful township with vast coverage area of more than 750 acres and with more than 75 departments, 8 faculties, 110 colleges, 7 evening colleges and 20 schools including this university enrolls today more than one and half million students; this University has earned a name for itself across the country. This university promotes research and has many extension plans like adult education programmes, SC/ST Cell, NSS and department of youth welfare to name a few.
With the motto – to seek truth is knowledge; Madurai Kamraj University has an emblem significant of Pandya Gopuram - Madurai City of Learning; Elephant and rocket – showing modern technology with ancient tradition; Two Fishes – showing flag of Pandya King; Lotus – showing purity and clarity; and Burning Lamp and Open Book – showing knowledge through dedicated efforts.
Madurai Kamraj University has extension activities besides research and teaching activities through its affiliated colleges and distance education programmes. It not only has undergraduate, post graduate and research programmes under all streams and subjects but also has extension activities carried out through its Youth Welfare Department, National Service Scheme and Department of Adult and Continuing Education. The regular colleges follow pattern on the basis of Semester, however Distance Education Programmes follow old system of annual examinations.
Madurai Kamraj University has set new standards in the conduct of examinations besides folmulation of new syllabus, which has earned credit to the name of this university across the country. Many universities have followed the steps of Madurai Kamraj University and thus made it a trendsetter.
